Dianthe “Dee” Spencer is a Professor of Music at San Francisco State University where she founded the jazz studies degree program. She earned an Ed.D. from the University of San Francisco; M.M. from Washington University in St. Louis; and a B.S. in Music Education from Florida A&M University. She taught piano at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Ma. A keyboardist, composer/arranger, and vocalist, Dee’s recordings include a live International Association of Schools of Jazz (IASJ) Baltic tour performance in Gdynia, Poland. Dee was a featured performer at the Beijing Jazz Festival and the Tasmanian Summer Festival. She served on the governing boards of the International Association of Jazz Educators (IAJE), Stanford Jazz Workshop, SF Chapter of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) and the Community Music Center. She is past director of the GRAMMY National High School Jazz Combo. Dee conducted the SFJAZZ All-Star High School Ensemble at the Lincoln Center in May 2002. Her debut CD, Vintage School was released in April 2002 at the Dresden Jazz Festival. Currently, Dee is assisting program development at the Fillmore Jazz Preservation Center for the Performing Arts in San Francisco.
